vodevil desde 1931 y en la radio a partir de 1938. A su primer éxito fílmico,
Reclutas (1941), le siguieron más de 30 comedias bufonescas, con Abbott interpretando a un hombre tosco y dominante ante el pueril payaso personificado por Costello. Actuaron por primera vez su célebre rutina"¿Quién está en primera? en el filme
Tramposos entrampados (1945). Su trabajo como dupla concluyó en 1957.
